When we look at our past and
evaluate it, we can determine what has worked and what has
not. We can evaluate the highs and lows, and decide what our
future can be like. The exercise "Peaks and Valleys" asks you
to chronicle your life on a time line. Go back to your
earliest memories and indicate at what age that certain high
or low memory had occurred.
Certain life events such as untimely deaths, earthquakes
and fires are unavoidable. We can either choose to be
devastated, or we can look for the blessings. There are always
two ways to look at everything. We can be very sad from a
death, but the blessing may awaken you to live your life more
fully. A fire may take away your earthly possessions,
but the blessing may be that you have a new respect for people
rather than things.
What this exercise will do is to identify what events
have made an impact in your life. Rewarded for hard work
or graduating from college are examples of positive impact situations.
Losing a grandparent or being involved in an auto accident,
would be negative experiences.
I would also like you to note
the times "absolute joy" or "bliss" have occurred in your
life. Was it the thrill of making the winning shot in
a basketball game, or was it when you experienced the birth of
a child? Write down the times and events that brought this great feeling your way.
It is good to look at your
whole life on one time line to get the most impact from this
exercise. Are most of your notes north or south of the time
line?
You will then write down a brief history of your life. You can take the information from your
lifeline but also chronicle other areas of your life that did not qualify to be placed on the line. Write about your
friends and what you enjoy most and least about these people. Write about your working life and the jobs you held. What were
the positives and negatives of each? Where have you traveled that you really enjoyed? Who did you travel with or what did you do
on these travels that made them most memorable? Where have you lived in your life and what did you most enjoy about that location?
You will then critique the life you just wrote about. What goals haven’t you accomplished so far?
The next step is a repeat of your first lesson. Go out into nature, meditate (reflect on what you
just wrote) and open yourself up to all the possibilities that exist in your the creation of a more ideal life. Do not place any
limitations on what would help create a more ideal life. Know that almost anything can be accomplished, especially if you take it
one step at a time, one day at a time and have a plan.
What is working and what isn't working in your life?
We will be determining how much of your life is working or is not working. We will be examining
these aspects in your life. If something is not working, we will help you to find a solution that will better suit your needs. For
example, if you are spending too much time in front of the TV, and you neglect spending time with your wife, your kids or doing your
taxes, the solution would be to turn off the TV. Sure that sounds simple, but we create habits in our lives that are so automatic
that even the simplest solutions evade us.
Do you spend 80% of your waking day working and find it is crowding out time with loved ones? Do
you suffer from the disease to please and help others while sacrificing yourself? Are there areas that you do not include in your
present lifestyle that you wish to add? Subtract? Do you plan your day or do you just let it happen? In a later class we will go
into more detail about time management. Here we want you to understand the basics of where you now spend your time and if that time
allocation is where you want it to be.
The premise of the Total Life Planning Institutes programs are that we believe you can
realistically achieve just about anything you truly want in your life. All that is needed is to acknowledge what
needs to be done, craft a plan and implement the plan. Often times the implementation of a life changing plan only takes short
periods of time each day. They must be done consistently over
long periods of time.
Can you see the benefits of looking at your past and not recreating
the negatives in your future? YOUR PAST
DOES NOT HAVE TO EQUAL YOUR FUTURE! You do not have to remain stuck in the past. Your past is not your destiny... you can change
your destiny by simply by not repeating the past and creating a
new PLAN!
We will first have you complete our exercises, and then
we will have you answer a series of
